Sister Sheba's Dragonfly Herbal Mosquito Repellents
I formulated my line of herbal insect repellents after finding dead birds in the streets of Rancho Cordova on my lunch break. Sacramento County Vector Control had a widely publicized campaign encouraging citizens to report the whereabouts of dead birds as a harbinger of West Nile Virus. Not long after, the entire county was sprayed with pyrethrin for mosquito control, and every year since 2004, a public health campaign called “Fight the Bite”, has been waged to encourage everyone to use insect repellent. Posters in doctor's offices and clinics advise the use of DEET.
Like many people, I'm leery of using DEET. Some studies say it causes cancer, others say no. I know that people had to deal with mosquitoes long before the invention of multinational chemical corporations. How did they cope?
According to the CDC, mosquito repellents work because mosquitoes are attracted by skin odors and carbon dioxide from the breath. They bite because they want the protien in the blood to help develop thier eggs. Only female mosquiotes bite. Mosquito repellents do not kill mosquitoes, they make the wear unattractive to mosquiotes. You may still see mosquiotes in the area.
I began my research on the internet, using CDC, FDA and EPA websites for my initial information. After searching academic, aroma therapy and organic herbal websites, I figured what books I need to buy, studied them and developed Sister Sheba's Three Dragonfly Lemon Eucalyptus Mosquito Repellent Formula.
Dragonflies are mosquito predators and the Three Dragonfly formula contains three natural repellents, Lemon Eucalyptus, Patchouli and Cypress. The vetiver rounds the fragrance off, so you repel mosquitoes, not humans. Your cat however, may be put off by the citrus notes, and anyone allergic to citronella will also be allergic to Lemon Eucalyptus Oil. Use of Lemon Eucalyptus Oil is not recommended for children under age three or for pregnant women.
I have a sister who lives in Florida, who is allergic to citronella. She is the inspiration foe Sister Sheba's Lavender Dragonflies Mosquito Repellant. This product is not approved by the FDA. I designed it for those who choose not to use DEET and/or are allergic to citronellal, the active ingredient of citronella, lemon eucalyptus and other citrus scented natural mosquito repellents
